This loss of farmland, especially to urban and suburban development, also contributes to rising greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. A 2012 study by UC Davis researchers found that an acre of urban land emits 70 times more GHGs than an acre of irrigated cropland.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Additional benefits that can come with conserving farmland and rangeland include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Agricultural and rural economic viability<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Soil carbon sequestration <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Open space and recreation <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Flood mitigation<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Groundwater recharge <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Wildlife habitat<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\r\n<div class=\"pull_out_quote_main\" id=\"calcan-secondary-button-block_ca86636e8a79a8093812233a75f93504\">\r\n    <div class=\"pull_out_quote_icon\">\r\n        <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/calclimateag.org\/wp-content\/themes\/CalClimateag\/assets\/images\/quote-icon.svg\" alt=\"quote_icon\">\r\n    <\/div>\r\n    <div class=\"pull_out_quote\">\r\n                    <p>\u201cThe combination of land prices and the pressure to develop in Sonoma County makes it difficult for farming families to stay in agriculture. SALCP is critical for leveraging funds to protect our working lands while also reducing carbon emissions.\u201d<\/p>\r\n                                <div class=\"bio_author\">\r\n                <p>&#8211; \r\n                                            <b>Misti Arias,<\/b>\r\n                        Acquisition Program Manager, Ag + Open Space                <\/p>\r\n            <\/div>\r\n                <\/div>\r\n<\/div>\r\n\r\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Sustainable Agricultural Lands Conservation Program (SALCP)<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As part of the state\u2019s efforts to support urban in-fill development and reduce vehicle miles traveled, in 2015 the state launched the Sustainable Agricultural Lands Conservation Program (SALCP). SALCP is a competitive grants program administered by the Department of Conservation and it funds both permanent conservation easements and strategic planning and policy development grants for local governments to protect farm and ranch land at risk of development. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">CalCAN and our partners advocated for the creation and improved funding for SALCP. This is the primary funding source for the SALC Program.<\/p>\n                                <\/div>\r\n                            <\/div>\r\n                        <\/div>\r\n                                                <div class=\"blog_faq_block\">\r\n                            <div class=\"blog_faq_header\"><p>AB 823 (2013) <\/p>\r\n                                <div class=\"blog_faq_arrow\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/calclimateag.org\/wp-content\/themes\/CalClimateag\/assets\/images\/angle_down.svg\" alt=\"\"><\/div>\r\n                            <\/div>\r\n                            <div class=\"blog_faq_inner_block\">\r\n                                <div class=\"site-desc\">\r\n                                    <p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.leginfo.ca.gov\/pub\/13-14\/bill\/asm\/ab_0801-0850\/ab_823_bill_20130423_amended_asm_v97.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span>AB 823<\/span><\/a><span> <\/span><span>(2013) \u2014 Introduced by Assemblymember Eggman, co-sponsored by CalCAN, AFT and CAFF, requires local governments to adopted a minimum standard of 2:1 farmland mitigation when a project results in the conversion of farmland to non-agricultural uses. The bill moved out of the first two policy committees but continued strong opposition from the building industry blocked it in the Assembly appropriations committee.<\/span><\/p>\n                                <\/div>\r\n                            <\/div>\r\n                        <\/div>\r\n                                                <div class=\"blog_faq_block\">\r\n                            <div class=\"blog_faq_header\"><p>SB 367 (2015)<\/p>\r\n                                <div class=\"blog_faq_arrow\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/calclimateag.org\/wp-content\/themes\/CalClimateag\/assets\/images\/angle_down.svg\" alt=\"\"><\/div>\r\n                            <\/div>\r\n                            <div class=\"blog_faq_inner_block\">\r\n                                <div class=\"site-desc\">\r\n                                    <p><a href=\"https:\/\/calclimateag.org\/mx\/sb-367-passes-full-senate\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span>SB 367<\/span><\/a><span> (2015) \u2014 Introduced by Senator Wolk, c<\/span><span>o-sponsored by CalCAN. Among other things, the bill calls for increasing the insufficient SALCP allocation to 2% of total cap-and-trade investments.
