{"id":4888,"date":"2014-08-07T23:04:29","date_gmt":"2014-08-07T23:04:29","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/calcanstaging.kinsta.cloud\/?p=4888"},"modified":"2021-06-28T15:47:09","modified_gmt":"2021-06-28T22:47:09","slug":"fruit-growers-adapt-to-warmer-winters-drought","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/calclimateag.org\/es\/fruit-growers-adapt-to-warmer-winters-drought\/","title":{"rendered":"Fruit Growers Adapt to Warmer Winters, Drought"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Climate change is threatening several of California\u2019s most valuable crops. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.plosone.org\/article\/info%3Adoi%2F10.1371%2Fjournal.pone.0020155\">Recent<\/a>\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.plosone.org\/article\/info%3Adoi%2F10.1371%2Fjournal.pone.0006166\">studies<\/a>\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.sciencedaily.com\/releases\/2009\/07\/090721214622.htm\">suggest<\/a> that warmer temperatures, and the associated reduced winter chilling period, could render California\u2019s climate unsuitable for growing a variety of fruits and nuts. Insufficient winter \u2018chill hours,\u2019 defined as the cumulative number of hours below 45 degrees Fahrenheit, can <a href=\"http:\/\/agadapt.ucdavis.edu\/chillhours\/\">disrupt<\/a> pollination, delay flowering, lower yield, and reduce fruit quality. California orchards are predicted to experience <a href=\"http:\/\/cnap.ucsd.edu\/pdffiles\/Baldocchi_fruit_jan2008.pdf\">less than 500<\/a> chill hours per winter by the end of the 21st century, which will impacts the yields of walnuts, pistachios, apples, pears, and stone fruits like cherries, apricots, nectarines, peaches, and plums.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_4889\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-4889\" style=\"width: 266px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/agadapt.ucdavis.edu\/chillhours\/\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-4889\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/calclimateag.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/chillinghours-table1.png?resize=266%2C297&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"Courtesy of UC Davis\" width=\"266\" height=\"297\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-4889\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Courtesy of UC Davis<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><b>Cherries and Chill<\/b><\/p>\n<p>For several years, researchers have pointed to <a href=\"http:\/\/science.kqed.org\/quest\/video\/uncool-cherries\/\">California cherries<\/a> as particularly vulnerable to warming winters, with yields expected to decrease <a href=\"http:\/\/news.stanford.edu\/news\/2009\/january7\/calbehot-010709.html\">20 percent<\/a> by the year 2050. The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nass.usda.gov\/Statistics_by_State\/California\/Publications\/News_&amp;_Information\/201407CAcherry.pdf\">USDA<\/a> recently reported that the 2014 nationwide cherry production was 2 percent lower than in 2013, while California\u2019s statewide cherry production was down 63 percent compared to 2013 yields.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_4890\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-4890\" style=\"width: 217px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.slowmoney.org\/national-gathering\/2011\/speakers?id=CarlRosato\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-4890\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/calclimateag.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/CarlRosato.jpg?resize=217%2C271&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"Carl Rosato, owner of Woodleaf Farm Photo Courtesy of Slow Money\" width=\"217\" height=\"271\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-4890\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Carl Rosato, owner of Woodleaf Farm<br \/>Photo Courtesy of Slow Money<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The USDA attributed California\u2019s cherry crop failures primarily to lower winter chill hours.<\/p>\n<p>We spoke with Al Courchesne of <a href=\"http:\/\/froghollow.myshopify.com\/\">Frog Hollow Farm<\/a>, who agrees that the warmer winter and reduced chill hours had negative effects on his cherries this year. Farmer Al gave positive reviews of his other stone fruits, however, and reported a record apricot crop.<\/p>\n<p>Carl Rosato of <a href=\"http:\/\/woodleaffarm.com\/\">Woodleaf Farm<\/a> also reported issues with his cherries, although his apples, peaches, and pears emerged unscathed from this year\u2019s warm winter. He noted that the cherries did not get brown rot; rather, they withered during bloom. This contributed to his speculation that other climatic forces, such as high humidity or wind, may have disrupted his cherries this year. If reduced chilling hours were entirely to blame, growers might have experienced issues with other high-chill tree crops, too.<\/p>\n<p><b>Too Much Warmth or Too Little Water?<\/b><\/p>\n<p>While climate scientists stress the necessity for growers to adapt to warmer winters, farmers may be more concerned with the effects of the three-year drought. According to the <a href=\"http:\/\/droughtmonitor.unl.edu\/\">US Drought Monitor\u2019s<\/a> July 29th update, storage for California\u2019s 154 intrastate reservoirs stood at 17.3 million acre-feet, about 60 percent of the historical average. As a result, the state is short more than one year\u2019s worth of reservoir water, or 11.6 million acre-feet, for this time of year. Nearly 59 percent of the state\u2019s total area is in an \u201cexceptional drought\u201d &#8212; the most severe category reported by the Drought Monitor. Another 24 percent is classified in the next highest category, \u201cextreme drought.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_4893\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-4893\" style=\"width: 220px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"http:\/\/droughtmonitor.unl.edu\/Home\/StateDroughtMonitor.aspx?CA\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-4893\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/calclimateag.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/Drouht.png?resize=220%2C220&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" width=\"220\" height=\"220\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/calclimateag.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/Drouht.png?resize=300%2C300&amp;ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/calclimateag.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/Drouht.png?resize=150%2C150&amp;ssl=1 150w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/calclimateag.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/Drouht.png?resize=768%2C768&amp;ssl=1 768w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/calclimateag.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/Drouht.png?w=816&amp;ssl=1 816w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 220px) 100vw, 220px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-4893\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">US Drought Monitor: California<br \/>August 5, 2014<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>USDA meteorologist Eric Luebehusen <a href=\"http:\/\/droughtmonitor.unl.edu\/Home\/StateDroughtMonitor.aspx?CA\">suggests<\/a> that these numbers reflect three consecutive years of dryness beginning to manifest themselves.<\/p>\n<p>Farmer Al called this devastating multi-year drought \u201cthe great limiting factor for agriculture.\u201d At Frog Hollow Farm, the drought has reaffirmed his commitment to using a biological approach to agriculture. Maximizing soil aeration and applying compost to boost soil organic matter are a few of the techniques that Farmer Al uses to conserve water and improve resiliency. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.agwaterstewards.org\/index.php\/practices\/soil_management\">Cover cropping<\/a>, reducing tillage, improving irrigation efficiency, <a href=\"https:\/\/calclimateag.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/Water-Stewardship-Fact-Sheet.pdf\">recycling<\/a> water, establishing vegetative buffer zones, and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.agwaterstewards.org\/index.php\/practices\/dry_farming\">dry farming<\/a> techniques can also slow water flow and minimize the need for applied water,<\/p>\n<p>Carl isn\u2019t convinced that the drought or reduced winter chill hours are entirely to blame for substandard yields. On Woodleaf Farm, he explained, the biggest issue is the unpredictability of cold spikes in the spring. Erratic spring weather caused serious frost issues during seven of the past ten years on Carl\u2019s farm, which led him to install a blanketing system over his orchards for frost protection.<\/p>\n<p><b>Adapting to Lower Chill<\/b><\/p>\n<p>Research suggests that California growers develop new tree <a href=\"http:\/\/agadapt.ucdavis.edu\/chillhours\/\">cultivars<\/a> with reduced chilling requirements and establish <a href=\"http:\/\/www.plosone.org\/article\/info%3Adoi%2F10.1371%2Fjournal.pone.0006166\">management<\/a> practices to cope with <a href=\"http:\/\/www.plosone.org\/article\/info%3Adoi%2F10.1371%2Fjournal.pone.0020155\">insufficient<\/a> winter chill.<\/p>\n<p>Many growers are engaged in low-chill cultivar development on their own farms. Farmer Al has eliminated most stone fruit varieties with high winter chill requirements. Carl uses reduced-chill cultivars and also breeds his own peaches. However, there are some concerns with breeding low-chill fruit, namely that high-chill varieties maintain a quality and taste unique to California-grown fruits. Additionally, developing new cultivars can require expensive and long-term research.<\/p>\n<p>Suggested management changes involve manipulating irrigation, planting density, and shading to reduce orchard temperature, as well as implementing <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sciencedaily.com\/releases\/2009\/07\/090721214622.htm\">agrochemicals<\/a> to manage tree <a href=\"http:\/\/www.plosone.org\/article\/info%3Adoi%2F10.1371%2Fjournal.pone.0006166\">dormancy<\/a>. As we noted in a <a href=\"https:\/\/calclimateag.org\/es\/climate-change-and-winter-chill-hours\/\">blog anterior<\/a>, these adaptation techniques are resource and energy intensive.<\/p>\n<p>While these strategies can surely buffer growers against reduced winter chill, it is important to note that a plethora of climate change impacts threaten California farms. This is why diversification is a crucial component of increasing resiliency against climate change. Both Carl and Farmer Al blunted the impact of a potentially devastating cherry loss this year by cultivating a variety of additional crops. There are two upcoming opportunities for you to give feedback on how the State of California plans its climate research agenda for agriculture over the next several years.<\/p>\n<p>(1) The Fourth California Climate Change Assessment will provide critical information on the scope of climate impacts and adaptation options for the State. In particular, this Assessment will conduct original, local-level research on impacts from extreme weather events like floods, wildfires, and drought.
