According to the NASS survey conducted in the first two weeks of June, <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><b>California sweet cherry production will be down 63% from last year, with the smallest harvest since 1998. The culprit? A warm, dry winter, with reduced chilling hours<\/b>.<\/span> Poor pollination is also believed to have played a role. Scientists have been saying for a while\u00a0that cherries will be particularly hard-hit by climate change impacts, with average annual crop loss close to 20%\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/news.stanford.edu\/news\/2009\/january7\/calbehot-010709.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">proyectado<\/a>\u00a0by 2050. This year\u2019s devastating crop failure may, unfortunately, become a more common experience for the state\u2019s cherry growers.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8211;<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center;\"><b>Report Highlights Climate Threats to Agriculture<\/b><\/h2>\n<p>A major new report outlines the multiple and severe risks to U.S. agriculture under climate change. \u2018<a href=\"http:\/\/riskybusiness.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><i>Risky Business: The Economic Risks of Climate Change in the United States<\/i><\/a>\u2019 highlights <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><b>agriculture as both a particularly vulnerable and an eminently adaptable industry<\/b><\/span>. The analysis finds that an increase of 33 to 70 days per year over 95\u00ba F could have significant implications for the health and productivity of agricultural laborers in the Southwest. Decreased water availability is expected to be the most significant impact on California\u2019s agriculture. The report suggests that in some cases, particularly for commodity crops grown in the Midwest and Great Plains regions, crop switching may be the only viable adaptation response.<\/p>\n<p>The report\u2019s close attention to agriculture as a sector is perhaps due to the influence of Risky Business Project co-chair Tom Steyer, whose<a href=\"https:\/\/tomkatranch.org\/mobile-homepage\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u00a0TomKat Ranch<\/a>\u00a0is pioneering rotational grazing and carbon sequestration practices. TomKat hosted a CalCAN field day in summer 2011.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8211;<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center;\"><b>California Drought Update<\/b><\/h2>\n<p>With summer officially begun, we took a look at the\u00a0U.S. Drought Monitor\u00a0again to check the status of California&#8217;s ongoing historic drought. <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><b>As of June 24th, nearly one-third (32.98%) of the state\u2019s area is officially in an \u2018Exceptional Drought&#8217; \u2014 the highest category of drought there is<\/b>. <\/span><b><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Another 43% of the state is\u00a0under\u00a0\u2018Extreme Drought\u2019 conditions<\/span>.<\/b>\u00a0Meteorologists say\u00a0their dire categorization of over three-quarters of California&#8217;s land is <a href=\"http:\/\/www.climatecentral.org\/news\/californias-drought-just-got-a-little-worse-17586\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">due to<\/a> the cumulative effects of three consecutive years of dryness and drought. The largest contiguous swath of the state under \u2018Exceptional\u2019 drought conditions stretches from Merced to Santa Barbara and encompasses practically all of the agriculture-rich San Joaquin Valley.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8211;<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center;\"><b>CARB, CDFA Meeting on Cap-and-Trade &amp; Agriculture<\/b><\/h2>\n<p>The California Department of Food and Agriculture (CDFA)\u00a0has <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cdfa.ca.gov\/egov\/Press_Releases\/Press_Release.asp?PRnum=14-025\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">announced<\/a>\u00a0that it will host a <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><b>meeting on July 1st to discuss the state\u2019s Cap-and-Trade program and \u201cother environmental market opportunities for farmers\u201d<\/b><\/span>. The meeting will take place from 10am &#8211; 3pm at the CDFA Auditorium in Sacramento, and will also be <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cdfa.ca.gov\/LiveMediaStream.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">streamed online<\/a>. Just last week, the state\u2019s Air Resources Board released a Discussion Draft of its updated\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.arb.ca.gov\/cc\/capandtrade\/meetings\/meetings.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Rice Protocol<\/a><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">.<\/span>\u00a0If approved, the protocol would enable rice farmers to receive financial compensation for cultivation practices that result in greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions reductions.
