With state-level action more critical than ever, this summit provided a much-needed space for strategizing, learning, and solidarity.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Building Power in Challenging Times<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Twenty-six organizers from 18 <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.soilpolicynetwork.org\/members\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">member organizations<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> convened for two days, joined by DC-based organizers, policy experts, legislative staffers, and journalists. The in-person gathering offered an invaluable complement to the Network\u2019s regular Zoom meetings, allowing for deeper strategy-building and connection.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some members arrived fresh from the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/sustainableagriculture.net\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">National Sustainable Agriculture Coalition<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2019s winter meeting, grounding discussions in the latest policy challenges (see CalCAN\u2019s recent blog post <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/calclimateag.org\/es\/nsac-winter-meeting-2025\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">aqu\u00ed<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">). The weight of the moment was palpable\u2014news of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/greatamericancrop.com\/news-resources\/article\/2025\/02\/14\/thousands-of-usda-workers-fired\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">mass firings at the USDA <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">broke as members debriefed meetings on Capitol Hill, and others received sobering updates about funding cuts to their organizations and from farmers who are learning that reimbursements they were promised by federal conservation programs may go unfulfilled.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Yet, amid the turbulence, the summit fostered a sense of resilience and camaraderie. With its longstanding tradition of supporting civic engagement and justice-oriented advocacy, the space provided an intentional setting for members to deepen relationships, share lessons, and strategize for collective impact.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The impact of the National Network\u2019s tradition of peer mentorship was evident as members workshopped their campaigns\u2014trading insights, strategies, and lessons learned from their respective states. These discussions showcased the diverse ways advocates are pushing for soil health policies, from long-term legislative planning to securing funding and mobilizing grassroots power. Across the country, Network members are meeting the moment with bold, strategic action.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In Montana, the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/northernplains.org\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Northern Plains Resource Council<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is playing the long game. With the legislature convening only in odd-numbered years, they are leveraging the state\u2019s annual <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/montanasoilhealthweek.macdnet.org\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cMontana Soil Health Week\u201d<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to build relationships between producers and elected officials and set the stage for a legislative push in 2027.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">En <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/ilstewards.org\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Illinois Stewardship Alliance (ISA)<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is actively elevating the importance of soil health in the state legislature through an effort to establish their own Soil Health Week. They are also working alongside the Association of Illinois Soil and Water Conservation Districts to restore critical funding for conservation programs.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In Texas, the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/farmandranchfreedom.org\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Farm and Ranch Freedom Alliance (FARFA)<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is mobilizing grassroots support to strengthen the state\u2019s <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.tsswcb.texas.gov\/otg\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cOn the Ground\u201d Conservation Program<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.
