We invited several local experts and state <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/a12.asmdc.org\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Assemblymember Damon Connolly<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to learn from each other and discuss how to support family dairy farms and sustainable dairy management. The tour was incredibly inspiring and generated productive dialogue among dairy producers, technical assistance providers and sustainable agriculture advocates. Assemblymember Connolly was actively engaged throughout the afternoon, asking important questions and demonstrating his commitment to his agricultural constituents and community.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Focus on AMMP: Reducing Methane Emissions<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The central focus of the conversation was on <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/calclimateag.org\/es\/ammp\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">California\u2019s Alternative Manure Management Program (AMMP<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">). California dairies produce a significant amount of agricultural methane, much of which comes from the anaerobic decomposition of liquid manure.\u00a0 AMMP was designed to fund equipment which separates manure solids from liquids and produces valuable compost, thereby reducing potent methane emissions caused by anaerobic decomposition in manure ponds.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Calfiornia Department of Food and Agriculture (CDFA), which\u00a0 administers AMMP, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdfa.ca.gov\/oefi\/ammp\/docs\/AMMP_flyer.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">reports <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">that as of January 2024, AMMP-funded projects throughout California have reduced greenhouse gas emissions by 1.5 million metric tons of CO2 equivalents (MTCO<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">e) over five years, an amount equivalent to removing more than 300,000 cars from the road for one year. However, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/calclimateag.org\/es\/climate-bond-for-agriculture\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Governor Newsom\u2019s proposed 2024-25 budget <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">would stall this progress by dramatically cutting funding for the AMMP program and several other climate smart agriculture programs.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Touring Sustainable Dairies in Sonoma County<\/b><\/h2>\n<h4><b>Renati Dairy: Innovative Manure Management<\/b><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At Renati Dairy, the first stop on the tour, we heard from Denny Renati and his nephew Ty about their third-generation farm which produces organic milk from cows pastured on beautiful rolling hills outside of Petaluma. Ty successfully applied for an <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/calclimateag.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/Renati-Dairy-AMMP.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">AMMP grant <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a few years ago in order to upgrade their manure management system and reduce methane emissions. <\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_18797\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-18797\" style=\"width: 331px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-18797\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/calclimateag.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/IMG_0610-Large.png?resize=331%2C441&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" width=\"331\" height=\"441\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/calclimateag.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/IMG_0610-Large.png?resize=225%2C300&amp;ssl=1 225w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/calclimateag.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/IMG_0610-Large.png?resize=768%2C1024&amp;ssl=1 768w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/calclimateag.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/IMG_0610-Large.png?w=960&amp;ssl=1 960w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 331px) 100vw, 331px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-18797\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Auger solid separator used to remove manure from the liquid waste stream which allows the water to be reused.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\" data-wp-editing=\"1\">Rather than using water to flush their stalls, they now scrape the manure into collection pits where two aerators oxygenate the slurry and minimize methane off-gassing. They use a simple auger solid separator to remove manure from the liquid waste stream and reuse the water. The solids are dried and composted and used<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> as healthy bedding for their cows, reducing costs and greatly decreasing the truckloads of rice hulls coming from the Sacramento Valley that they used to import for bedding. The Renati\u2019s plan to pursue a grant from the Healthy Soils Program to help pay for applying the compost to their grazing land.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWe took advantage of the AMMP funding to become more economically efficient and sustainable. Without it, we never could have afforded the improvements.\u201d\u00a0 &#8211; Ty Renati<\/span><\/i><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h4><b>Triple C Dairy: Year-Round Composting<\/b><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At Triple C Dairy, just off Highway 101 north of Petaluma, we were joined by a few other dairy producers and had a tour from Bob Camozzi and his nephew Blake. They have a similar solid separator as the Renati\u2019s. Bob Camozzi used AMMP funding to build a covered barn to help compost the manure solids year round, something they couldn\u2019t previously do during the rainy season because the compost would have been too wet. They are applying compost to their pastures where they\u2019ve seen improvement in soil health and pasture fertility as well as the ability of the soil to absorb water during the winter rains. Composted manure also minimizes the leaching of nitrates into groundwater.<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_18799\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-18799\" style=\"width: 275px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-18799\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/calclimateag.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/IMG_0606-Large.png?resize=275%2C206&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" width=\"275\" height=\"206\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/calclimateag.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/IMG_0606-Large.png?resize=300%2C225&amp;ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/calclimateag.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/IMG_0606-Large.png?resize=1024%2C768&amp;ssl=1 1024w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/calclimateag.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/IMG_0606-Large.png?resize=768%2C576&amp;ssl=1 768w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/calclimateag.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/IMG_0606-Large.png?w=1280&amp;ssl=1 1280w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 275px) 100vw, 275px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-18799\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Year-round compost barn.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Throughout the tour, it was emphasized that dairy producers need the support of technical assistance providers to help them design the methane-reducing projects and apply for the grants. We were lucky to have with us several important partners who do just that: Randi Black from the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/cesonoma.ucanr.edu\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">UC Cooperative Extension in Sonoma<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Patricia Hickey from <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/goldridgercd.org\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gold Ridge Resource Conservation District<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> y <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Anya Starovoytov from <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/sonomarcd.org\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sonoma Resource Conservation District<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jeff Creque from the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.carboncycle.org\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Carbon Cycle Institute<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a CalCAN coalition member, also reinforced the importance of technical assistance and taking a<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.carboncycle.org\/carbon-farm-planning\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> carbon farm approach<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to optimize greenhouse gas emissions reductions and carbon sequestration in soils. Representatives from <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/cloversonoma.com\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Clover Sonoma <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">y <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.organicvalley.coop\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Organic Valley <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">also\u00a0<\/span>participated and talked about how important government funding is to keep the dairies that produce milk for their brands in business and thriving while also providing climate solutions.<\/p>\n<h4><b>Camozzi Farm: Research and Innovation in Composting<\/b><\/h4>\n<figure id=\"attachment_18796\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-18796\" style=\"width: 255px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-18796\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/calclimateag.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/IMG_0618-Large.png?resize=255%2C340&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" width=\"255\" height=\"340\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/calclimateag.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/IMG_0618-Large.png?resize=225%2C300&amp;ssl=1 225w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/calclimateag.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/IMG_0618-Large.png?resize=768%2C1024&amp;ssl=1 768w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/calclimateag.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/IMG_0618-Large.png?w=960&amp;ssl=1 960w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 255px) 100vw, 255px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-18796\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Assemblymember Connolly and Dr. Tibisay P\u00e9rez walking through the waist-high hay.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Our third stop on the tour was in the middle of a field of hay on the Camozzi farm where we gathered to hear from UC Berkeley researchers <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/ourenvironment.berkeley.edu\/people\/whendee-silver\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dr. Whendee Silver<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> y <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/nature.berkeley.edu\/silverlab\/?staff=tibisay-perez\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dr. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tibisay P\u00e9rez<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. They <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">are conducting studies on the effect of incorporating basalt rock dust and biochar into manure compost. Biochar is produced through a process called <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">pyrolysis (<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">burning organic waste at high temperatures in an oxygen-free vacuum) and can be a way to convert agricultural waste such as <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">almond shells and hull waste, removed trees, and other woody plant material into a valuable product.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With sophisticated state-of-the-art equipment that is nearly invisible amid the tall hay, the researchers are measuring which combinations of compost, basalt<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0and biochar have the greatest benefit on a number of outcomes including <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">soil nitrogen retention, soil structure and health, plant productivity and greenhouse gas emissions. Their findings will build upon a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubs.acs.org\/doi\/10.1021\/acs.est.2c03467\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2022 study<\/span><\/a> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">that found that adding biochar to composted manure can reduce methane emissions by 60 to 84 percent compared to composting alone.\u00a0 The Camozzi\u2019s see their collaboration as another way to contribute to dairy sustainability and the health of their communities.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>The Need for Consistent Funding<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">California\u2019s <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/calclimateag.org\/es\/climate-bond-for-agriculture\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">projected budget deficit<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of $44.9 billion has resulted in a mix of funding delays, clawbacks, and no new proposed funding for CDFA\u2019s suite of climate smart agriculture programs. This interruption in funding will set back efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, sequester carbon on agricultural land, and slow efforts to reach the state\u2019s climate goals.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>As we heard loud and clear during these tours, farmers want to be part of the solutions to climate change and they understand how doing so can also lead to greater financial stability.<\/strong> <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">CalCAN is part of a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/resilientfoodsystem.org\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">coalition of food and farming organizations<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> calling for the legislature to include funding for climate smart agriculture in a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/calclimateag.org\/es\/lobby-day-builds-support-for-food-farming-bond-investments\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">climate bond measure<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. We see a climate bond that includes funding for these programs as one answer to ensuring continued progress toward curbing climate change.<\/span><\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Earlier this month, CalCAN organized a tour of two organic dairies and a farm in Sonoma County.
