A <a href=\"https:\/\/www.unitedag.org\/site\/assets\/files\/49689\/finalreport_covid19_agimpacts_061820.pdf?utm_source=UnitedAg+Mailing+List&amp;utm_campaign=9f36ec1e32-email_econ-covid-report_6-23-20&amp;utm_medium=email&amp;utm_term=0_76bcd6a3a3-9f36ec1e32-366096969\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">recent study<\/a> found that pandemic-related losses in California agriculture are estimated to total $2 billion to date.While not as widely covered, the climate crisis also has economic impacts on growers. For example, the 2013-2016 drought exacerbated by climate change led to a $1.84 billion economic loss and 21,000 job loss for the state\u2019s agriculture economy.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Climate change\u2019s economic impact on California agriculture \u00a0<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>There is a wide range of climate impacts on agriculture that can lead to financial hardship for growers caused by yield losses, decreased efficiency and increased costs. Chief among these is constrained water resources and unpredictable precipitation patterns which will be among the most challenging effects of climate change for agriculture in California. Scientists predict even greater variability ahead, as well as increased intensity and frequency of extreme weather events. Water scarcity impacts the bottom line by sometimes causing land fallowing, yield drops and failures, and increased costs for buying, pumping and delivering water.<\/p>\n<p>Warming temperatures affect agriculture in many ways, starting with the people who grow and harvest our food. Chill hours \u2013 a crucial part of the life cycle of many fruit and nut trees \u2013 are increasingly shortened by warming trends and can <a href=\"https:\/\/www.capradio.org\/articles\/2016\/03\/23\/climate-change-chill-hours-and-california-crops\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">lead to lower yields<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Exacerbated by trends towards warmer temperatures and earlier snowmelt, today\u2019s fire season in the western U.S. starts earlier, lasts longer, and is more intense compared to the last several decades. We just have <a href=\"https:\/\/calclimateag.org\/es\/support-climate-smart-agriculture\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">to invest in them<\/a>. California has four <a href=\"https:\/\/calclimateag.org\/es\/climatesmartag\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Climate Smart Agriculture programs<\/a> that incentivize practices that mitigate the impacts of a rapidly changing climate while investing in long-term farm and ranch viability.<\/p>\n<p>What impact have these programs had? \u00a0Check out our <a href=\"https:\/\/calclimateag.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/2020-CSA-Fact-Sheets-Reduced.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">fact sheet<\/a> from January 2020, detailing investments and program reach since program inception. Since that publication date, even more has been invested in the state\u2019s agricultural climate solutions. In March 2020 the <a href=\"https:\/\/calclimateag.org\/es\/solutions\/sweep\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">State Water Efficiency and Enhancement Program (SWEEP)\u00a0<\/a> announced <a href=\"https:\/\/calclimateag.org\/es\/farmer-demand-for-irrigation-energy-efficiency-program-exceeds-available-funding-125-farms-awarded-grants\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">$9.7 million in grants for 125<\/a> farmers and ranchers and in May 2020 the Healthy Soils Program awarded just over <a href=\"https:\/\/calclimateag.org\/es\/healthy-soils-program-sees-record-demand-despite-pandemic-22-million-in-incentives-grants-announced\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">$22 million for 316 projects<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Foundational to our food system\u2019s sorely needed transformation into one that is resilient to crises and provides environmental and public health benefits, is ensuring that farmers stay in business.
