This year\u2019s highly anticipated grant cycle is coming up, featuring many <a href=\"https:\/\/calclimateag.org\/es\/get-ready-to-apply-healthy-soils-program-application-streamlined-max-award-amount-increases-ahead-of-record-round\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">improvements<\/a> and $28 million\u2014more available funding than ever before.<\/p>\n<p>Despite program and application upgrades, the process of applying, implementing and monitoring can still be time consuming and burdensome for many farmers. <a href=\"https:\/\/calclimateag.org\/es\/solutions\/technicalassistance\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Asistencia t\u00e9cnica<\/a> (TA) providers\u2014including <a href=\"https:\/\/calclimateag.org\/es\/new-climate-smart-ag-technical-assistance-grants-announced\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">recently launched program<\/a> that supports TA providers specifically for CDFA\u2019s Climate Smart Agriculture programs\u2014exist for this purpose. With the help of a recent HSP Demonstration Grant, they have been exploring the benefits of compost application, mulching, and cover crops on an educational plot growing broccoli, romaine lettuce, cucumber and more. They are working with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jacksonfamilywines.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Jackson Family Wines<\/a> at La Crema Estate at Saralee\u2019s Vineyard to determine pest soil building and carbon sequestration practices. With this project, they are experimenting with different combinations of compost application and reduced tillage for the greatest carbon storage. SMI will monitor changes in soil health, fertility and water-holding capacity, as well as forage productivity and plant capacity. Sonoma RCD will work on the collection and analysis of soil organic matter data.
