Unlike heat illness prevention and pesticide safety, there have been no well-established protocols to mitigate the occupational health and safety risks associated with wildfires.<\/p>\n<p>In addition to the dangers of an active fire, wildfire smoke, ash, and chemicals used to treat fires negatively affect air quality. Farmers and farmworkers are at a greater risk for exposure due to their work outdoors and long shifts.<\/p>\n<p>On December 13, 2018, after the Camp Fire became the deadliest and most costly wildfire in California history, blanketing Sacramento and much of the Central Valley in smoke, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dir.ca.gov\/oshsb\/oshsb.html\">Occupational Safety and Health Standards Board (OSHSB)<\/a> received a joint submission from Mitch Steiger, <a href=\"https:\/\/calaborfed.org\/\">California Labor Federation<\/a>; Douglas Parker, <a href=\"https:\/\/worksafe.org\/\">Worksafe<\/a>; and Anne Katten, <a href=\"https:\/\/crla.org\/\">California Rural Legal Assistance Foundation<\/a>, seeking emergency regulatory protection of outdoor workers from the harmful effects of wildfire smoke.<\/p>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-11830 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/calclimateag.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/Tailgate-Poster_8.5x11_v7_English_Page_1.jpg?resize=501%2C389&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" width=\"501\" height=\"389\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/calclimateag.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/Tailgate-Poster_8.5x11_v7_English_Page_1.jpg?resize=300%2C233&amp;ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/calclimateag.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/Tailgate-Poster_8.5x11_v7_English_Page_1.jpg?resize=768%2C596&amp;ssl=1 768w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/calclimateag.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/Tailgate-Poster_8.5x11_v7_English_Page_1.jpg?resize=1024%2C794&amp;ssl=1 1024w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/calclimateag.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/Tailgate-Poster_8.5x11_v7_English_Page_1.jpg?w=2048&amp;ssl=1 2048w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 501px) 100vw, 501px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>After months of advisory meetings, regulation \u00a75141.1 \u201cProtection from Wildfire Smoke,\u201d\u00a0went into effect on July 29, 2019.
