By 2012, the number of California farms and ranches producing renewable energy had almost tripled to nearly 5,500 farms.<\/p>\n\n\n\r\n<div class=\"pull_out_quote_main\" id=\"calcan-secondary-button-block_37709bc6f8da97ec3296afea05b48d46\">\r\n    <div class=\"pull_out_quote_icon\">\r\n        <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/calclimateag.org\/wp-content\/themes\/CalClimateag\/assets\/images\/quote-icon.svg\" alt=\"icono_cita\">\r\n    <\/div>\r\n    <div class=\"pull_out_quote\">\r\n                    <p>\u201cEnergy is not going to get cheaper, so we are making long-term investments to get us through hard economic times.\u201d<\/p>\r\n                                <div class=\"bio_author\">\r\n                <p>- \r\n                                            <b>John Teixeira,<\/b>\r\n                        Teixeira &amp; Sons LLC, Merced County                <\/p>\r\n            <\/div>\r\n                <\/div>\r\n<\/div>\r\n\r\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">CalCAN Campaigns<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p> In 2011, Governor Brown signed into law a CalCAN-sponsored bill (<a href=\"https:\/\/leginfo.legislature.ca.gov\/faces\/billNavClient.xhtml?bill_id=201120120SB489\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">SB 489, Wolk)<\/a> which expanded the state\u2019s Net Energy Metering (NEM) program to include all available types of renewable energy generation, including bioenergy. NEM allows utility customers to connect renewable energy projects to the grid and get credit on their energy bills for the energy they produce.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In 2012, another CalCAN-supported bill (<a href=\"http:\/\/leginfo.legislature.ca.gov\/faces\/billNavClient.xhtml?bill_id=201120120SB594\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">SB 594, Wolk<\/span><\/a>) was signed into law, creating a new program called Net Energy Metering Aggregation (NEMA). NEMA allows renewable energy produced on one meter to be credited against electricity use on other meters of the same customer. Prior to SB 594, farmers who wanted solar to offset most or all of their energy consumption had to connect a separate solar array to each meter, making it inefficient and cost prohibitive for many growers to maximize the opportunities to produce clean energy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In late 2016, CalCAN published a <a href=\"https:\/\/calclimateag.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/Shining-Brighter-NEMA-report.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">NEMA Progress Report<\/a>. The report summarized findings and recommendations from interviews with growers who have installed solar and solar industry representatives involved with agricultural projects. The report found that:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Many growers still lack access to reliable information on NEMA.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Unpredictable grid upgrade and interconnection costs delay and prevent projects.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The California Public Utilities Commission\u2019s strict requirement that meters must be on contiguous land in order to be aggregated runs contrary to NEMA\u2019s intent and ignores the reality that farms often operate on unconnected but nearby lands.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>In the fall of 2018, CalCAN put together a comprehensive set of recommendations for the next Governor of California about how to scale up sustainable agricultural climate solutions, including through on-farm renewable energy. <a href=\"https:\/\/calclimateag.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/AbundantSolutions.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Read the report<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:40px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>With renewable energy, California farmers and ranchers can off set their energy needs, save money and contribute climate solutions.
