One recent academic literature review by six UC researchers found that by the end of the century, California can expect a 50 percent increase in the number of severe droughts, a 50 percent increase in the number of severe flooding events, and a potential 65 percent loss in snowpack (Pathak et al., 2018). Good water stewardship is key to the long-term sustainability of California&#8217;s vibrant agricultural production and communities.&nbsp; &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Other benefits that can come with conserving water include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Lower water and energy bills for farmers<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Reduced agricultural use of scarce water supplies<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Improved air quality from more efficient and solar-powered irrigation pumps<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Reduced N2O emissions from more precise water application<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>New policies passed in the past eight years have laid the groundwork for long-overdue groundwater management, nitrate pollution reduction, and investments in on-farm water use efficiency. <\/p>\n\n\n\r\n<div class=\"pull_out_quote_main\" id=\"calcan-secondary-button-block_b626db43e0287aad4290c7dd4ef47335\">\r\n    <div class=\"pull_out_quote_icon\">\r\n        <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/calclimateag.org\/wp-content\/themes\/CalClimateag\/assets\/images\/quote-icon.svg\" alt=\"icono_cita\">\r\n    <\/div>\r\n    <div class=\"pull_out_quote\">\r\n                    <p>\u201cConserving water is not rocket science, but there is a learning curve. SWEEP supports producers in taking risks to learn new methods.\u201d<\/p>\r\n                                <div class=\"bio_author\">\r\n                <p>- \r\n                                            <b>Rich Collins,<\/b>\r\n                        Collins Farm, Dixon, CA                <\/p>\r\n            <\/div>\r\n                <\/div>\r\n<\/div>\r\n\r\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">State Water Efficiency and Enhancement Program&nbsp;(SWEEP)<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>In 2014, under an emergency drought declaration, Governor Brown authorized a new program called the State Water Efficiency and Enhancement Program(SWEEP). The program\u2019s funding comes from the state\u2019s cap-and-trade and bond revenue and is used to make grants to farmers and ranchers for practices that reduce both water and energy use.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Coordinated by the California Department of Food and Agriculture (CDFA), SWEEP provides cost-share grants to growers to install more efficient irrigation systems, including subsurface drip irrigation, solar-powered pumps, and remote soil moisture monitoring equipment. Not surprisingly, the program has been very popular with farmers\u2014during the first six grant rounds, almost three times more applications were received than were funded.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Eligible projects include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Implementing micro-irrigation or drip systems<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Conversion of a fossil fuel (e.g. diesel) pumps to solar, wind, electric, or natural gas energy<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Low pressure irrigation systems<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Read <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/calclimateag.org\/es\/solutions\/sweep\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">more information on SWEEP<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Related Programs<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Sustainable Groundwater Management Act &#8211; <\/strong>In 2014, the legislature passed the Sustainable Groundwater Management Act (SGMA), a package of bills requiring local governments to monitor and regulate groundwater usage.
