Necessary measures to contain the spread of the virus have resulted in the immediate loss of key markets for growers, and ongoing uncertainty threatens farmers\u2019 ability to plan for the growing season just underway. At the same time, hundreds of thousands of people nationwide have been laid off, and the need for emergency support \u2013 including food \u2013 for the most vulnerable in our society is now.<\/p>\n<p>CalCAN statement: Striving for resilience and adaptability. Read the statement <a href=\"https:\/\/mailchi.mp\/calclimateag\/march2020news\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2>Update April 29, 2020: Ensure COVID-19 aid reaches farmers in need:<\/h2>\n<p>As farmers and ranchers across the country are feeling the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic, USDA is preparing to distribute $16 billion in direct aid to producers who have experienced financial losses. Applications for the Coronavirus Food Assistance Program will be open in early May \u2013 but the program as currently designed may leave out thousands of farmers \u2013 including producers who sell into local and regional markets and producers historically underserved by USDA, including farmers of color.<\/p>\n<p><strong>How can we all help?<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>If you\u2019re a farmer: share your story on social media, tagging USDA and using the hashtag #dobetterUSDA<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Here\u2019s an example:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHey @USDA, I\u2019m a new farmer taking over the organic raisin business from my dad. I tried to get a PPP loan two weeks ago but the lender ran out of money before I finished my application. We need #coronavirus aid \u2013 I\u2019m worried you will leave us out. This is a photo of [<em>your fields, your crops, etc \u2013 what does the photo illustrate?<\/em>].\u00a0<em>[Ask your question here!]\u00a0<\/em>We need you to #dobetterUSDA!\u201d<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Farmers, you can also contact<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>California\u2019s state Farm Service Agency (FSA) office \u2013 who will be distributing\u00a0the funds \u2013 to ask questions about your eligibility and register your concern at (530) 792-5520.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/calclimateag.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/Call-Scripts-and-Guidance-for-Calling-FSA-Offices.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Click here<\/a>\u00a0for call guidance and sample questions to ask.<\/li>\n<li>Not a farmer?
