Unveiling Our Vision for a Program on Agriculture and Climate

Screen Shot 2015-03-24 at 10.37.32 PMToday, at the 4th California Climate and Agriculture Summit, CalCAN will unveil its Blueprint for a California Program on Agriculture and Climate.

The Blueprint is a keystone of CalCAN’s long-term vision for how the State of California can untap agricultural climate solutions. It offers detailed recommendations for the design of a state-funded program that would combine incentives, technical assistance, outreach, and research on climate and agriculture issues. It is intended to:

  • Provide an overview of the ways agriculture can play a constructive role in achieving the state’s Assembly Bill 32 (AB 32) goals and meeting related policy objectives found in Senate Bill 545 (SB 535) and AB 1532.
  • Inform the implementation of a California-wide agricultural program to catalyze farm and ranch practices that mitigate climate change in diverse ways and provide co-benefits to our economy, environment and public health
  • Highlight ‘shovel-ready’ climate solutions already being practices by some of California’s most innovative farmers and ranchers

The Blueprint was developed over many months through a process whose methodology is described in the report. In order to ensure that its recommendations are both ambitious and feasible, CalCAN interviewed a wide variety of stakeholders and discussed many drafts of the report with our advisory council, reviewer panel, agency staff, and other experts.

An Executive Summary and the full report are available on the CalCAN website at: http://www.calclimateag.org/blueprint
